Pagans seek to incorporate

MONTICELLO - Hawthorn Grove, a pagan religious group, has decided to incorporate under the laws of the State of New York. A grove is equivalent to a temple or church. The group chose its name in honor of a type of tree, sacred among ancient Celts, associated with fertility, protection and plenty.

According to the certificate of incorporation approved at the group's October 31st meeting in Monticello, Hawthorn Grove is a pagan congregation existing to "assemble at regular intervals to celebrate the cycles of nature and honor the potent spirits of the divine Queen and King of the elements, honoring the community of all Deities, and seek self-development through meditation and other spiritual techniques; and promote daily prayer and study according to the teachings of the native and shamanistic religions which are indigenous to ancient and modern peoples.

Hawthorn Grove meets at least once a month at members' homes for ritual worship and study of Wiccan and other pagan history, theology, philosophy and traditions. With nine members present, the group discussed formally affiliating with a national organization.

Hawthorn publishes a newsletter entitled The Hawthorn Spinner. For more information, contact: Hawthorn Grove, PO Box 706, Monticello, NY 17201.
